Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How demanding is the High Trail, and what are the trail conditions?
The High Trail is graded Moderate to Demanding. Day 1 includes a sustained 850m elevation gain, with the steepest stretch along the rocky 28 Bends (approx. 1.5–2 hours of continuous climbing). Portions of the trail follow narrow paths along cliff sides with loose gravel and high exposure. We recommend sturdy hiking footwear with good grip and trekking poles. Travelers with acute joint issues or severe vertigo should assess carefully.
Q: What elevation should I expect, and is altitude sickness a factor?
The trail starts at ~1,800m (Qiaotou) and peaks at ~2,670m atop the 28 Bends, with the overnight stay at ~2,400m (Halfway Guesthouse). While acute mountain sickness (AMS) is less common below 3,000m, the physical exertion of ascending can cause shortness of breath and elevated heart rate. Climb at a measured, consistent rhythm and stay well-hydrated. The drive to Shangri-La at the end of Day 2 reaches 3,200m, where rest is recommended.
Q: Where does the tour officially finish on Day 2, and does it include a 2nd night of hotel?
The standard 2-day tour concludes upon private vehicle drop-off at your hotel in Shangri-La Dukezong Old Town around 16:30 on Day 2. The 2nd night accommodation in Shangri-La is NOT included in this package, though our concierge is happy to book recommended boutique Tibetan inns for you. If you prefer to return to Lijiang instead, your driver can transfer you back to Lijiang at no extra charge if requested prior to departure.
Includes 1 night at Halfway Guesthouse (ensuite room), breakfast, private trailhead transfers, luggage forwarding & gorge permits.
